The best way to reflect on the origins and development of the Boston Jets group over time is to start by sharing an excerpt from my email to the group on January 24, 2011, one day after losing the AFC Championship Game to the Steelers:
It’s about 24 hours post game and the finality of it all has sank in. I just wanted to thank everyone for an amazing season. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I started this group before the 2009 season with about 5 people are our first meetup (a win over the Texans by the way). The goal was just to have a few fellow Jets fans to watch the games with in the heart of enemy territory. I am in awe that we now have 124 members as of today! So many times over the last few weeks I would look around Tommy Doyles, hear the cheers and get a huge smile on my face. This season has been an unbelievable rollercoaster, and I enjoyed every minute of the ride. Without getting too sappy, I really feel like we’ve been through it all this year and have become a family. As much as it hurts right now (and it does a lot more than I thought it would), I’ll never forget the excitement after our many last second wins and the beatdown of the Pats last week (perhaps my favorite Jet moment ever).
On a personal note, as many of you know one of my biggest dreams in life is to get the opportunity someday to watch the Jets in the Superbowl with my dad. It’s an agreement we’ve had as long as I can remember that if they ever got there no matter where we were in the world we would get together for it. It wasn’t meant to be this year, but I know that day is coming soon. With Rex and Sanchez at the core, the future is bright.
Fast forward three and a half years later and it’s amazing to see how the group has grown. We have close to 400 members on the facebook page, 300 on the meetup page and it still feels like we’re just getting going. The team hasn’t exactly excelled over that period but I’m confident the best times are ahead in the near future.
I can’t overstate how grateful I am to everyone who has contributed to make the group what it is today. In particular Melissa, Paul and Joe who have done a ton of work behind the scenes, as well as alumni who have moved away including Erik, Bill and Wizard.
We’re getting to a transition point where we’ve developed a good foundation of members, found a stable home at MJs and now will focus on growing the group over the long term. This effort will be led mainly by Bobby, Jon, John and Dan in collaboration with the rest of us old timers.
Finally, this group is nothing without all of you coming out to support it and the team each and every week. From that very first game against the Texans when I didn’t know if anyone other than me would show up, to now when I can count on a huge gathering every week, it’s been amazing to watch it all unfold over 5 years. And this is only the beginning….
